VOLUNTEERS PAINT DEARBORN PARK IN MID-CENTURY COLORS
Friends of Dearborn Park in Decatur aims to clean, spruce area with community pride

The Decatur group Friends of Dearborn Park had volunteers come out to help with their Paint the Park and Popsicles paint and clean-up community project on Sat., July 9, 2016, from 8:59-11:10am at Dearborn Park, 1301 Deerwood Drive, Decatur, Ga 30030. A neighborhood gathering took place from 11:11-12Noon with King of Pop popsicles being served. Over 100 popsicles were leftover that were donated to Chris Kids http://www.chriskids.org/home-page

Dearborn Park is located between City of Decatur and Midway Woods, a neighborhood that was developed in the 1950’s so Friends of Dearborn Park painted the benches, the pavilion and picnic table in Mid-Century Modern colors.

With the community’s help they are helping to make Dearborn Park a more ecologically, well-maintained and environmentally-friendly park, we decided to beautify the hardscape,” said Ayanna Williams, Park Pride Director of Community Building. “DeKalb does an excellent job with park upkeep, but there’s more we can do as a community to share in keeping public spaces clean and visually appealing, so we encourage people to come out, if only for a few minutes, to lend a hand or support the volunteers.”

Realtor Kevin Polite, managing partner at HausZwei Homes, Solid Source Realty Agent and Decatur resident, donated the paint and paint supplies that will be used

“Getting involved with this project was a no-brainer,” says Polite. “We believe in giving back to the community and doing our part in being active and engaged partners within the communities we serve. It was such a very rewarding experience”

Friends of Dearborn Park was formed in 2007, and over the years has spruced up the green spaces and park areas in Dearborn Park in Decatur, replaced playground equipment, cleared walking paths, and planted greenery in the park that serves 2,000-10,000 people. The organization over the years has cleared invasive species, and cleared trash including old tires, etc. Projects are completed in partnership with the DeKalb County Department of Parks and Recreation; Kathie Gannon, DeKalb County Commissioner; City of Decatur; Park Pride; Trees Atlanta and neighborhood groups such as Midway Woods, Dearborn Park, Winona Park and Oakhurst.
