Midway Woods

Midway Woods: A Neighborhood with History and Heart
Midway Woods is one of those neighborhoods that feels like the best of both worlds. It’s located in unincorporated Dekalb County, right next to the City of Decatur, which means you get all the perks of Decatur’s lifestyle but with lower taxes. The neighborhood is bordered by Memorial Drive, Columbia Drive, and Candler Road, with Midway Road running right through the heart of it.

When Midway Woods was first developed in the 1950s, it was full of single-story brick ranch homes, most built between 1950 and 1953. A lot of those homes are still here, but the neighborhood has really evolved. Today, you’ll see homes that have been completely transformed—topped off with second stories, sometimes even an attic, and expanded to over 3,000 square feet. We’re now seeing homes sell for $1 million, like the two that recently sold on Deerwood Drive and one on Fenway Circle. The growth is incredible. I remember buying a property here in 2011 for $55,000, renovating it, and reselling it for over $215,000. At the time, that was almost unheard of, but it set the stage for what’s happening in Midway Woods now.

Schools and Education
If you have kids, there are some great school options here. Starting in 2021, students in Midway Woods are zoned for Avondale Elementary, Druid Hills Middle, and Druid Hills High, all part of Dekalb County’s school system. Plus, we’re lucky to be in the top attendance zone for the Museum School of Avondale Estates, one of the area’s best charter schools. If you’re looking for private schools, we’ve got those, too—The Friends School of Atlanta and The Waldorf School are just minutes away. For higher education, Agnes Scott College and Columbia Theological Seminary are close by.

Food, Breweries, and Things to Do
Living near Decatur means you’re surrounded by some of the best food and drink options in Atlanta. Some of my favorites are The White Bull, Iberian Pig, and Brick Store Pub. Don’t miss James Beard semifinalists like The Deer and the Dove or Chai Pani. And if you’re in the mood for Michelin Star-level dining, check out Kimball House. For a sweet treat, Buena Gente Cuban Bakery is a local treasure.

Avondale Estates is just a short drive away and offers a fantastic brewery scene with places like The Lost Druid Brewery, Wild Heaven Beer, and Little Cottage Brewery. Decatur has its own great breweries, too, like Three Taverns and Inner Voice. No matter your taste, there’s something nearby for everyone.

Getting Around
Need to get somewhere? MARTA buses run throughout the neighborhood and can connect you to train stations like Decatur Station, making it easy to commute or explore the city.
